Perspective – from Latin perspicere: to see through

Life is all about perspective, about the way you look at things. If you look through a camera, you only see a certain angle of the big picture and you might not understand it as a whole. But if you change your perspective just a little bit and zoom in or out you get a new understanding of what you’re seeing. Same in life. You can walk around with blinkers all the time and you will be stuck in the angle you see. Or you decide to use the input you can get to change your perspective. And usually then the big picture then becomes clearer. Input is everywhere – talk to friends, to strangers even, travel, read, take pictures or paint. Be creative!

‘The German Perspective’ does not claim to represent my fellow citizens at all – it’s just my very own view on things. And I did not come up with the name in the first place. These credits go to my dear friend Tourmama – check out her blog, it is extremely entertaining! Tourmama and I were talking the other night and she said something along the lines of “Well, you could be my German perspective”. So the idea was born, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked it.

‘Lunatique’ is my online alter ego. It does not so much refer to being crazy, but to ‘lunar’. I love the moon, I find it fascinating. Also, my all-time favourite album is ‘Dark side of the moon’ by Pink Floyd and those of you who have an equally brilliant taste in music will see the reference to the lyrics of ‘Brain Damage’. In ‘real’ life, I am a girl, born in 1977, raised and still living in Germany.

So why do I keep a blog in English? First of, I can obviously reach more people. Secondly, I love the English language and want to keep up the practise, too. Now, even though I think my English is pretty good, I might make mistakes or say something funny every now and then. Which blows me since I am a total grammar Nazi – and this is the only Nazi reference here – don’t mention the war! However, if you find any mistakes you might keep them or, even better, let me know, I can only improve!

In this blog, I will tell you about things that influence my perspective. I love to travel so there will be a ‘Big City Lights and Country Roads’ section. Languages amaze me, so I have a ‘Linguistics’ section. There is also a ‘Body & Soul’ category and, last but not least the ‘Tales life tells’. Over the past few years I discovered that I really like photography, so I will share some photos with you every now and then. Last but not least, in the ‘Advice from the past‘ section you will find memories – memories in the form of letters that my grandparents exchanged when Granddad was a POW.

I hope you enjoy yourselves here; feel free to comment and like as feedback is what we need to change our perspectives every now and then! For personal feedback, email me at thegermanperspective@gmail.com!

Yours truly, madly, deeply!

  4. Hi, thanks for your visit to my blog and your kind comment. I love your perspective. My husband is a part-time student majoring in German and he hopes to someday move to Germany. In fact he lived there for a year before we were married. In that sense we’re even closer neighbors. I don’t speak the language although I’m learning (very slowly). I agree with you on your motivation for blogging in English.

    • Hi, thank you very much for the return visit 🙂 So will you be moving to Germany together?
I tried to learn Dutch a few years ago, too. I think the problem with learning the two languages is that they are very similar, but then there are differences that we don’t expect 🙂 Groetjes!
